Just had a massive rant with my flatmate about the current government and the state of the country. (There was another tube strike today, to put the conversation in context)
It’s shocking, really, when you actually sit down and think about it. I mean, yes, there are countries where the people are worse off; there are countries with dictators, corrupt governments, genocide, famine, a complete absence of human rights, and that’s terrible. I’m not trying to belittle that in any way.
But look. We’re a first world country. We’re a legitimate global power. And we’re trapping schoolchildren in alleyways in a manner that’s scarily reminiscent of Tiananmen Square.
I read a piece the other day that speculated we might be in for a new age of riots. And to be totally honest, my immediate response to that was “good”.
We have a right to hold the government we elected to the promises they made. We have a right to expect them to act in our best interests. And if they won’t listen to us at the polls, or in our constituencies, then what other recourse do we have?
